Remi Adler, Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine practicing in SE Portland

REMI ADLER

Hi 👋🏻 I’m Remi (they/them)

I am an acupuncturist and herbalist in SE Portland, and I am here to help you feel more free. Freer from physical, emotional, and spiritual pain; freer from fighting against your body and mind; freer from the idea that it will never get better. Free to be more of who you truly are.

As an East Asian medicine practitioner, I approach your health as a unique constellation of patterns that your body has woven together over the course of your lifetime. Rather than chasing isolated symptoms, I work to understand the whole picture: the threads that connect your physical experience, your emotional landscape, and the life you are living. My goal is to support your body in finding its way back to balance.

I specialize in working with patients who are neurodivergent, or who suspect they might be. This work is deeply personal to me: after years of confusing and often dismissed health challenges, I was diagnosed with AuDHD (autism and ADHD) in my late 30's. That diagnosis was a revelation. I came to understand that navigating the world as a highly masked, neurodivergent person had been at the root of many of my somatic and psychological struggles. East Asian medicine's commitment to treating the individual, rather than the diagnosis, makes it a uniquely powerful framework for neurodivergent patients, whose presentations and needs are far more varied than any single label can capture.

I also hold a clinical specialty in supporting people through perimenopause and menopause. This hormonal transition can bring profound and often unexpected changes that ripple through every dimension of daily life: hot flashes, disrupted sleep, mood shifts, brain fog, joint pain, and changes in cycle patterns, to name a few. For neurodivergent people, this transition can feel especially destabilizing, as hormonal fluctuations often amplify existing sensitivities and bring long-masked symptoms to the surface. I am experienced in supporting patients navigating both at once. And if you are neurotypical, please know there is a great deal here for you too. Thoughtful, individualized care during perimenopause and menopause is something I am deeply passionate about offering to anyone who is ready to feel better supported in this phase of life.

You do not need to be neurodivergent to find a home here. Many of the conditions I work with most frequently affect people across the full spectrum of neurotypes, and I welcome anyone who is curious about what East Asian medicine has to offer and is looking for support with their physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

Conditions I enjoy treating include:

  • gut and digestive concerns: IBS, GERD, chronic bloating

  • sleep difficulties: insomnia, early morning waking, nightmares

  • joint hypermobility: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and related conditions

  • cardiovascular and autonomic concerns: POTS, dysautonomia

  • immune and allergic conditions: allergic rhinitis, asthma, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's and rheumatoid arthritis

  • chronic pain: Fibromyalgia, Raynaud's, and other persistent pain conditions

  • hormonal and life phase transitions: perimenopause, menopause, and beyond

  • menstrual and reproductive health: Endometriosis, PCOS, PMDD, cycle irregularities

  • mental and emotional health: anxiety, depression, rumination, nervous system dysregulation

  • long-standing or complex conditions that have been present since birth or for as long as you can remember

  • trauma history: relational, developmental, or collective

  • the physical and psychological toll of masking

  • sensory sensitivities

  • emotional overwhelm, meltdowns, or shutdowns

  • a complicated relationship with time, transitions, or daily structure

As a lifelong mover and someone living in an aging body, I understand firsthand how much it matters to stay connected to the physical activities that make us feel alive, grounded, and like ourselves. Managing pain that gets in the way of movement is something I care about deeply. I am also pleased to offer microneedling sessions, an area of longtime personal interest, as a complement to the East Asian medicine modalities and focuses described above.

I am a west-coast native; California, Washington, and Oregon have been my homes. I am a white, mostly able-bodied, neurodivergent, owning-class, queer person. Like you, I am in process, always learning, growing and working towards being a better neighbor to fellow humans and the rest of our natural world. It is a privilege to practice medicine on the current and ancestral unceded homelands of the Clackamas, Stl’pulmsh (Cowlitz), Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, and the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde.

When I’m not in the clinic, you can find me lifting heavy weights to metal music, attempting to embrace my tight hips in yoga class, spending time with my two loving partners, and trying to convince my cat to sit on my lap.

Education

Dr. Remi holds a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, the highest credential available to practitioners of Chinese medicine in the United States.

I earned my Masters and Doctoral degrees from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR. During my time at NUNM, I received close mentorship in several key areas of study: Classical Chinese Herbalism (with Heiner Fruehauf), Shen-Hammer pulse diagnostics and Chinese Medical psychology (with Brandt Stickley), and women’s health (with Lisa Tongel). Additionally, I studied craniosacral therapy with Michael McMahon, and I am currently enrolled in Ann Cecil-Sterman’s advanced acupuncture mentorship training focusing on the extraordinary, divergent, sinew and luo channels. My current and former acupuncturists, Sara Bowes and Kate Busby, have been some of my most profound teachers and mentors.

Before dedicating my life to studying East Asian medicine, I worked as a software developer, non-profit program manager, and I earned a bachelor’s degree in International Political Economy while studying Mandarin Chinese.
